Chemicals and Waste Management in SIDS
Small Island Developing States (SIDS) face distinctive challenges in the management of chemicals and waste. Their unique circumstances, including limited land area, high population density, scarce resources, rich biodiversity, susceptibility to natural disasters, and vulnerability to climate change, make waste management a complex task. Furthermore, their remote locations from global markets and relatively small economies of scale present additional difficulties.
Project Background
The Global Programme “Implementing Sustainable Low and Non-Chemical Development in Small Island Developing States (ISLANDS)” is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and supports Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to enter a safe chemical development pathway through the environmentally sound management (ESM) of chemicals and wastes. The ISLANDS Programme consists of thirty-three (33) SIDS and seven (7) Child projects across the Caribbean, Indian Ocean and Pacific Regions, with three (3) of those projects in the Caribbean region. The timeline for the GEF 10279 and 10472 projects is six (6) years, with GEF 10279 being implemented since 2021 and ending in 2026 and GEF 10472 being implemented since 2022 and ending in 2027.
